LOCATION AND WEATHER

Curaçao is located in the Southern Caribbean Sea, 35 miles off the coast of South America. Together with its sister islands of Aruba and Bonaire, Curaçao forms what is affectionately known as the "ABC"-islands. It is the largest island of the Netherlands Antilles measuring 38 miles in length and 2 to 7.5 miles in width. Approximate flying time from Miami, New York and Amsterdam is 2:30, 4:00 and 9:00 hours respectively. A unique desert climate and ecology prevails. The average temperature is 82 degrees with low humidity and refreshing year-round trade winds of over 13 knots to keep things cool and comfortable, even under the tropical sun.

CURAÇAO IS OUTSIDE THE HURRICANE BELT and the sun shines almost every day as the total yearly rainfall is only 22 inches with November and December being the rainiest months.

LANGUAGE

Dutch is the official language on the island but, there is no need to worry as English, Dutch and Spanish are widely spoken. The native tongue, Papiamento, is a melodic blend of Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, English, and African dialects.

WATER, ELECTRICITY AND TELEPHONES

Visitors can drink without worry as the island's tap water is distilled and purified sea water from one of the world's largest sea water distillation plants. It is completely free of all health hazards.
The electrical current is 110-130 volts A.C., 50 cycles. The majority of U.S. appliances that are 60 cycles devices will work, but some, such as hair dryers and irons, may overheat if used for too long. Check with the hotel staff or dive shop about charging delicate electronic equipment.
Calls to the island must be prefixed by your respective international access code (011 in the USA), followed by the 599-9 country code and a seven digit phone/fax number. You can dial anywhere in the world while in Curaçao with no problem, either by direct dialing from your room or with operator assistance.

CURRENCY AND MEDICAL SERVICES

The local currency, the Netherlands Antilles Guilder (ANG), is pegged to the US Dollar. Exchange rate is fixed at US $ 1.00 = ANG. 1.80. US Dollars are accepted all over the island as are most Travelers Checks and major Credit Cards.

European-and U.S.-trained doctors are available throughout the island and a modern hospital is fully equipped to respond to any situation. Curaçao also offers two state-of-the-art decompression chambers.

IMMIGRATION AND CUSTOMS

U.S. citizens must have a return or continuing ticket and proof of citizenship in the form of a valid passport or a birth certificate (must have a raised seal) along with an official picture ID (i.e.: drivers license, armed services ID or voters registration card with picture). All other travelers must present a valid passport.
U.S. citizens may take home up to $600 of merchandise duty free, provided that they have been out of the United States for at least 48 hours, are over the age of 21 and have not claimed an exemption within the previous 30 days. There are additional restrictions on liquor and tobacco products. The Curaçao Departure Airport Tax is US$ 20.00 per person.
